How are you listening? Are you always waiting to talk? Are you waiting to move, or listening to what is there?
In this three-hour Sunday workshop we will begin with tuning into our body with somatic methods of embodied anatomy to learn about your breath, weight and skeletal alignment, let go of unnecessary tension and access efficient movement pathways of strength. We will practice and explore what it is to be in a deep state of listening to what is there, without anticipating what is to come next, while moving and relating to oneself, the room and other bodies. We will listen to the materiality of your body and the environment it relates to on a micro and macro level.
Methods we will use are visual imagery, poetic verbal guidance, hands-on partnering, solo explorations, reflecting and moving through touch.
From creating a ground of embodied listening and trust we will enter contact improvisation technique exercises, which will evolve into dynamic jam-like sessions with specific focuses, integrating all of the information given in each exercise.

Contact Improvisation is a dance form developed in the 1970's in the US by Steve Paxton and fellow dancers. It has its base in the martial art Aikido, Zen meditation and post-modern dance but has evolved since then until today into different forms. The core of contact improvisation is to investigate how to allow yourself to be moved by gravity, while listening to the contact point between you and the floor, wall or another body.
The contact improvisation form Tuva Hildebrand is teaching is strongly connected to the US lineage, in the post-Judson and Paxton legacy, having studied with K.J. Holmes, Bradley Teal Ellis, Margaret Paek, Nina Martin and Paul Singh among others.
Somatic practice is an umbrella term mounted by Thomas Hanna in 1975 referring to alternative western bodymind practices such as Alexander technique, Feldenkrais, Ideokinesis, BodyMind Centering, and more, which are all influenced by eastern practices such as Yoga, Qi Gong, Tai Ji Chuan, Zen Buddhism, Tantra, Vedanta, eastern medicine and philosophy, western philosophy such as phenomenology and western medicine. During 1960 until today dancers in a wide range of communities have integrated these practices into their dance training into what can be called somatic dance improvisation.
Tuva Hildebrand is teaching somatic dance methods in the lineage of female somatic dance pioneer Eva Karczag, Alexander Technique, BodyMind Centering, Ideokinesis and Skinner Releasing Technique.

This workshop is for anyone with a regular movement and/or body work practice of some sort, whether it's contact improvisation, yoga, martial arts, sports, dance, or other.
It is preferred that you have some experience of contact improvisation, but if not, please write so when you sign-up.
